November 12, 2006 -Martinique Bistro

Martinique Bistro
59008 Magazine Street @ Eleanore St.

It’s possibly 55 degrees in the shade and they’re turning the heating lamps on. The heat of the one emanating across the small courtyard reaches me within seconds after being lit.
I have a fly in my wine. It’s so silent on this Sunday afternoon, except for the baby gurgling out an approval when he hears “blackened scallops with poached egg in hollandaise sauce” is on the menu. An expensive pallet begins at such an early age down here in the Bayou, the Garden District.
The streets are shrinking, sinking. Every time a small truck or SUV goes by, rolling down Magazine St. (French for: shopping) at a 20mph clip, my chair shakes.
This part of LA reminds me of L.A. The Echo Park region mixed with bits of the Canals of Venice Beach. The hidden away bistros amongst the lavishly ornate and multi-colored homes and simultaneously only blocks away some depravity.
